The exhibition explores Gianfranco Ferré’s unique approach to fashion design through a selection of sketches and his iconic garment, the white shirt, offering visitors an experience enriched by digital connections with the Ferré archive, including images and videos that expand on the exhibition’s narrative.

The white shirts on display take visitors on a journey through Ferré's stylistic research, along an itinerary in which the principles of design are embodied in endless variations on the archetype of the white shirt, a true icon of the designer's creative work. Taffetà, crêpe de chine, organza, satin, tulle, silk, or cotton fabrics, lace and embroidery, and hand-stitched seams follow one another in a crescendo of mastery and balance.

The designs, grouped into thematic sections, illustrate some of the fundamental principles of design that inspired the creative process of the designer, an alumnus of the Politecnico di Milano: starting with the body, continuing with matter, colour, detail, volume and finally movement.

The exhibition design, by architect Martino Berghinz, inspired by the typical codes of Ferré's language, is based on clean lines and pure geometries accentuated by the black and white contrast, and acts as a counterpoint to the refined opulence of the Sala degli Stemmi. The linear rigour of the exhibition of drawings, neatly arranged on perimeter panels, is contrasted by the dynamic play of shirts, grouped on a circular platform and moved by rotating mechanisms that give the exhibition an ironic and light-hearted tone.

“My roots are in Legnano. As much as I love travelling – in reality as well as in imagination, for work and for pleasure – I could not live without the certainty of a place, a dimension where one naturally feels at home, to which one naturally returns and rediscovers oneself. It is as necessary and indispensable as the irresistible urge to discover and experience other worlds. It is the certainty above all certainties, something that in its own way helps one to understand and make sense of what life, with its many realities, sets before us. My relationship with my city is alive, anything but nostalgic. It is where I was born and raised; where not only is my home, but above all, my family and my closest friends; where I return every evening from Milan. It is a small city – discreet, solid, and eminently liveable”.

Gianfranco Ferré, notes.
