Gianfranco Ferré. Moda, un racconto nei disegni
Centro Culturale Santa Maria della Pietà / Cremona
Gianfranco Ferré Foundation
The unusual length (50 metres) and linearity of the space at the Santa Maria della Pietà Cultural Centre in Cremona are broken up, but not interrupted, by modular panels, which house a selection of over one hundred autographed drawings by Gianfranco Ferré, divided into groups based on thematic or chromatic affinities, common features or graphic devices, without any precise chronological sequence.
The format is almost always the same: rectangular card (16x30 cm), commonly used by the designer to sketch his unmistakable silhouettes, sometimes coloured with care and attention to detail, sometimes reduced to a few sparse pencil or marker sketches. The only exception is a small but extremely striking group of sketches developed in extra-large dimensions.
The harmony that governs the composition of these “islands” of creativity on paper creates a highly coherent and easily accessible journey. The presence of certain garments from the Archive of the Gianfranco Ferré Foundation is not accidental, but exciting and significant: they are the authentic realisation in reality of an idea and a project that utilises the material and three-dimensionality of volumes and shapes.
“In my training, drawing exercises constitute a standard and daily practice. This is why I am defined as the ‘architect of fashion’, which, I confess, sometimes feels a little restrictive, because it has followed me since the beginning of my career and, above all, because it emphasises the logical-rational aspect of my work, overshadowing the component of passion, fascination and enchantment that is essential to complete the design process”.
Gianfranco Ferré, notes.
